Hola gente ! This is a mural they just finished at our school. The artist's name is Zarco. He got are the "dichos" from the students and also had them help paint. It is a big improvement from the "tagging" that used to be on the wall.

Jeny if its art, I will be there. To a critic like me, this Zarco student has vision. The composition itself tells me that he has a talent that will only grow. The image of the painting to me "a critic" illustrate a rare flaming bird reaching for the sky. The flames are visibly there. The wings of the bird reach with outstretched arms up to the sky, while his large yellow eye searches for the correct path.
The blurry words that are painted with this mural are hard to read. I can only read clearly the word educate, on the left hand yellow part of the mural. It is very good work Jeny. It also apparently carries a strong message to the one who stops by and see it. One thing that I "think" is not possible. That is that the school you mention is over that wall. Tell me that is not the school, please.

The school is on the other side of the street, don't worry Cesar. The owner of the house and the wall gave Zarco and the students permision to use the wall, after he saw the design of course. He wanted to make sure he wasn't going to put emillo Zapata or lowriders I guess. The blurriness is my camera not the mural. The students had to go home and ask their parents for dichos ( refranes) to add to the wall. Here are some of my favorites....
"Sufrimos mucho por lo poco que nos falta y disfrutamos poco de lo mucho que tenemos
"Se puede matar al soñador, pero no al sueño
"La persona inteligente no es la que da las mejores respuestas, sino la que hace las mejores preguntas

I honestly did not think the house was actually the school Jeny, it was only my inner joker raising his ugly head wondering how disadvantaged our children can get where you live. I am very impressed with the dichos your prefer. They must really be interpretations by some old wise owls in our culture Jeny. I personally like the one on the bottom of your list. For that same reason I pointed out to you that I did not want to make this thread all about me.
I wanted to learn. I wanted to hear some answers to my views. That`s all I asked for.
Take good care of yourself Jeny. And have a wonderful day today.
Amigo

"make sure he wasn't going to put Emillo Zapata" what's wrong with putting Emilliano Zapata on a wall?

The owner of the house is one of the only white guys left in the neighborhood. He isn't exactly "Down with the brown" if you know what I mean. Your comment makes me wonder though why we don't see the same political content in the murals that are being created now. I have colected photos of murals for years and have seen the messages change through out the years. The other question I think about is one that my son and I agrue about aften... Where does tagging end and art begin. I think the goal of art is to send some kind of message or create some kind of emotion. If I use that definition many of the "pieces" that I call placasos are art.

i think when you are taggin and just putting up your name or krew up on walls then its you know regular tagging even if you make the lettering cool and i think that when you use spray paint to create something that has depth and you use the can like you would a brush to paint a mural or something then its art that can apply to some of the abstract lettering tho the ones you can barely read. it also depends on your own definition of art.
as for murals i mean not all murals now a days are just about making a pretty picture but id think of painting on a wall and i would think the public would see it so i feel that is my turn to say what i think needs to be said because with this wall i can get my perspective of things on to a lot of people because whether you want to or not your eventually going to look at the wall or space. for me there is not enough things in the "art world" that has any thing to do with my cultures which would be mexican and native american. sure there are people but rarely do they get to the point where they are being taught about in schools or break away from just being latino art or native art rarely is our stuff seen as just art by it self it always comes singled out from art with a title. i feel when ever i get the chance to create art i want to remind people of us and teach them a little about our culture and our people so maybe people who dont know will start to learn and become more comfortable of us rather then having them live with a certain view that we are all dirt poor or we all work the fields or we all eat way too much or we all drink alot or.................. the other thing is that our youth dont know their own history. i remember in high school we had mecha and every mexican holiday or event everyone in the club would break out their mexican flags for the day and throw on jerseys and stuff but they hardly knew what they were celebrating and on top of that the rest of the school had no idea why all the latino's was wearing flags theyd be confused and be like i thought cinco de mayo was in may. haha i dont know i could go on but i feel that murals and public art is just another vessel to carry messages and we arent voicing it to its potential as of now.

I have collected photos of Chicano Murals since I was a teenager. I have noticed how the message has changed. The murals used to have more of a political message and focused more on the indigeous part of our culture. I wish more "street artist" would realize how powerful art is and use their talent to express more than their crew's name. I see some creative "graffitti art" but it usually carries no message.
